Rehabilitation after surgery is for people after orthopedic operations, including spine surgery, hip or knee replacement and ACL reconstruction. Bring the hospital discharge summary and the surgeon’s instructions.
What a visit looks like
A visit lasts 60 minutes. It usually includes:
- an interview about the symptoms, injuries, illnesses, medicines, activity and test results you already have,
- an examination of posture, painful movements, range of motion, muscle strength and selected neurological tests,
- treatment,
- exercise instruction and advice for everyday tasks,
- kinesiotaping when it is needed during that visit.
How to prepare
Bring comfortable clothes, a T-shirt and shorts. Shoes, trousers and a shirt come off for the posture check. Tie long hair back. Leave long earrings, necklaces and bracelets at home if the problem is in the neck, shoulder or hand. There is a place to change in the practice.
What to bring
Bring reports related to the problem: an X-ray, MRI or ultrasound, and after surgery or a hospital stay the discharge summary and the doctor’s instructions.
When to see a doctor first
Book a visit when pain limits work, sport or ordinary tasks, or when it continues after an injury or operation. See a doctor first if any of these appear:
- sudden weakness, increasing numbness, or trouble controlling the bladder or bowels,
- chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain spreading to the jaw or left arm,
- an injury with a clear deformity, major swelling, or a limb you cannot put weight on,
- fever, redness, a wound opening, or discharge after surgery.
In these situations contact a doctor or the emergency number. Physiotherapy does not replace a medical diagnosis.
